Why is the Dow Jones price weighted? You may know that different indices are weighted differently, in other words what weighting one stock might have on an index compared to another. The Dow Jones 30 index is unique - it is ranked by price - a higher weighting is given to a stock with a higher price rather than the more traditional method where the market cap of a company determines the weighting of the index. An index is made up of all the prices of its constituents. The reality is that one stock moving in the index doesn't have the same effect as another stock; that's what weighting is all about.
